Affiliate Summit Keynote Can Change Your Life
Posted on 29. Jan, 2010 by Logan in Conferences
Last week at Affiliate Summit west in Las Vegas one of the events I was most excited about was the keynote from Dr. Robert Cialdini. In fact if that was the only thing I did the whole time I was there, I still would have made the trip. Dr. Cialdini has definitely changed my business and the way I approach people.
For those that don’t know my background, I got my bachelors degree in marketing back in 2004. Honestly I don’t remember a whole lot from my college classes and a lot of what I learned isn’t really applicable to affiliate marketing. However I took a sales class in which the text book was Dr. Cialdini’s book Influence: Science and Practice. The two things I remembered about that class was that this information in the book was golden and that my professor reminded me slightly of Chevy Chase.
Out of all the books I spent good money on in college, Influence was the only one I’ve kept that I’ve read again, and am currently reading it for a third time. For those that attended Affiliate Summit, the book goes into a lot more depth of what he discussed. Out of all the books I’ve read, his book is by far the most influential on my career. In a nutshell, he talks about how to influence people ethically.
At the summit, he gave out cards at the end that listed his six principles and how to use it. Here is a brief overview, although I definitely recommend you check out his book.
Reciprocation – You, then me, then you, then me…
Be the first to give:
- Service
- Information
- Concessions
Scarcity – The rule of the rare.
Ephasize:
- Genuine Scarcity
- Unique Features
- Exclusive Information
Authority – Showing knowing.
Establish position through:
- Professionalism
- Industry Knowledge
- Your Credentials
- Admitting Weaknesses First
Consistency – The starting point.
Start:
- Small and Build
- With Existing Commitments
- From Public Positions
- Toward Voluntary Choices
Liking – Making friends to influence people.
Uncover:
- Similiarities
- Areas For Genuine Compliments
- Opportunities For Cooperation
Consensus – People proof, people power.
Unleash people power by showing:
- Responses of Many Others
- Others’ Past Successes
- Testimonials of Similar Others
If this doesn’t make much sense, definitely read his book. Everything from your advertisements, to your business relationships will transform and I guarantee you that you will make more money and be more successful by following his principles. It is a life changing book.
Also thanks to Shawn Collins and Missy Ward for booking an amazing speaker for the keynote. Well done!

That’s cool that you read Cialdini in college – maybe I should have chosen a better major.
One of the only things I took away from school was that Edward Hall was the father of proxemics, and I haven’t been able to do much with that.
I’m really glad you enjoyed the keynote – I was excited to have Cialdini speak and he definitely met my expectations.

I totally agree with Logan. It was an eye-opening experience to me. I have been thinking about what he was talking about since then, and started to apply some! I already ordered the book, hope to read it soon.
Thanks Shawn and Missy to have him at the summit, and I vote to have him again at ASE10 plus video if possible.

We always get somebody different as the keynote at each conference – there will be an annoucement soon.
Unfortunately, Dr. Cialdini would not permit us to record or broadcast the video, but we usually do that with the keynotes.

That’s because he wants to create scarcity and exclusivity!
