So today I wanted to feature a little business failure which is a little different than other Fail Fridays have been in the past. In fact it’s not quite as obvious and is more like a terrible business practice that has left a slightly bad taste in my mouth about Best Buy.
This morning I checked my email and got this message from Best Buy (whom I have a rewards card with).

You are receiving this e-mail because Best Buy® has changed the way marketing e-mail communications are managed. Currently you are registered to receive marketing communications from the Reward Zone® program, but have opted to not receive marketing communications related to Best Buy generally.
We are writing to let you know that Best Buy has changed the way it manages opt-out preferences. Going forward, opting out of either Reward Zone or Best Buy marketing communications will result in being removed from both marketing lists. In order to honor your request to receive Reward Zone program e-mails containing special offers, invitations to events and account updates, you have been opted-in to receiving Best Buy marketing communications generally. If you do not wish to receive these e-mail communications, you will need to update your opt-out preferences. Please note that if you do opt-out of Best Buy marketing communications, you will also opt-out of marketing communications from Reward Zone. You would continue to receive e-mails regarding your accounts and purchases at Best Buy, services with Geek Squad and Reward Zone certificates.
Thank you for being a valued Reward Zone member.
The point of this email is for them to tell me that they are automatically opting me into an email list that I already opted out of. That is pretty poor business practices if you ask me. Now I need top opt out again and mark all Best Buy emails as spam.
If you’re customers don’t want to read your emails, don’t send it to them. It’s that simple.
What are your thoughts?

That’s terrible. I never really liked Best Buy and only go there if I want something urgently.
I would definitely mark all of their emails as spam.
You don’t like Best Buy?
Interesting, I wonder why?
Best Buy is #1 for me. LOVE THAT STORE
I used to like them, but not so much anymore. They don’t have that great of selection on computer stuff and their prices are generally higher than most places. I’d probably just go there to buy home electronics and that’s about it.
I got the same e-mail, and when I went to opt out… I can’t. I could not find an opt out option either on Best Buy or on the RewardZone site. This waste of my time has me ticked off.
Wow, I didn’t even click on the link. I just did and it takes me to a page can’t be found. That’s really poor business.
I’m having the same problem. You click the link and the page never loads.
I got the message and immediately had the same reaction. Excuse me, I’ve been opted-in? Unless I’m mistaken, that is the very opposite of OPT-IN. They shouldn’t be tying these two mailing lists together anyhow. The RewardZone e-mails (of which I get very few) is geared toward a very specific audience with a very specific message intended. I have no wish at all to start receiving general Best Buy marketing messages, most of which I expect will be little use to me. So I should be cut off from RewardZone e-mails now?
Now checking BestBuy.com for who to complain to about this. (I almost never register complaints, but it really rubs me wrong when companies make decisions for me.)
I was about to say that you can log in to “My Account” at bestbuy.com to change preferences, but:
1) The login didn’t recognize my password
2) So I tried to use the Forgot Password feature, but that doesn’t recognize my e-mail address. The same address to which I received the message in question. What’s going on over there?
I’ve checked my RewardZone profile, and there’s no where there to change any e-mail preferences whatsoever, let alone this new incarnation.
Wow, that is a major fail.
OMG, That sux.
