Have you looked at working point. Another great option. They do need some improvements. But Their team is impressive. I think they will be around for a very long time. Something worth looking at.

Wow, I wish I read this years ago, but I kinda feel locked into Quickbooks Online now. However, I’ve had all good experiences with them – it works for me. I like that I can give my accountant read-only access so he can run reports w/out waiting for me. I’m trying out their payroll services now (if NY State ever gets me the various ID numbers I need).

This post could be turned into a rather nice niche site (if you ever run out of ideas)

Julian, both of those are invoicing applications, which don’t really fit on this list as they don’t have book keeping features which is what this post was about. I do like Zoho for invoicing though.

I did check out ClearBooks briefly, but since it appeared to be geared towards the UK, I wanted to stick with an application that was more catered to preparing for the tax needs of the US. ClearBooks appeared to be a pretty good solution though.

May, thanks for your comments. I think I came off a little different than what I meant with the post. I really liked Clarity and would have probably gone with it if I hadn’t found Outright. There are a lot of great services out there with only a single person running the show, and that isn’t a bad thing. Thanks for coming by and adding to the post.

Did you know that Outright and IACEZ were also made with one programmer? Less Accounting was created by 2. Outright is the only one with financial backing (other than Quickbooks of course). It doesn’t take a whole team to build an accounting software, which is why there are so many of them around! Users generally care about the stability and the look and feel of the application — which is largely due to personal preference.
